NBC AVIATOR'S DINNER, 1927

Aviation dinner, 1931

This photo shows the Aviator's Dinner at the Astor Hotel in New York City, broadcast over NBC in April, 1931. Charles Lindbergh and Emilia Earhart are seen seated at left. This photo was published by NBC for its 25th anniversary, claiming it to be a photo of the network's inaugural broadcast on November 15, 1926, and it has been frequently seen as such in historical writings ever since - but it is incorrect. Proof of this is Lindbergh's presence. He was unknown to the public until his trans-Atlantic flight on May 21, 1927, and Earhart was just beginning her aviation career in 1926.

The NBC inaugural broadcast on November 15 was a four-hour gala affair, featuring Will Rogers and the Metropolitan Opera Company. It was carried by 22 stations as far west as Kansas City. If any photographs of that event exist, they don't seem to be publicly available.
